It is believed by researchers essential oil inhalation has a direct impact on your olfactory system (nose) which then influences your autonomic nervous system.
Eucalyptus essential oil has been used to treat influenza because of its anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial effects. One constituent in eucalyptus oil is 1,8-cineole that was found to reduce cytokines that cause inflammation in guinea pigs and significantly reduces edema at sites of inflammation. 1, 8-cinole is a powerful antioxidant with a strong radical scavenging activity that inhibits cytokine secretion, which translates to reduced, edema (swelling), inflammation, and pain.
